Turn the VPN off first.

If Alipay opens but the payment fails, your VPN is the first suspect. Chinese payment apps do not like tunneled traffic.

  1. 1Disconnect the VPN completely. Do not just pause it.
  2. 2Wait three seconds, reopen Alipay, and scan again.
  3. 3If it still fails, switch from WiFi to mobile data or the other way around.
  4. 4After the payment clears, turn the VPN back on.

After this transaction: link a second card and put ¥300-500 cash in your bag. Future you will be less annoyed.

Counter-side playbook

What to do when Alipay scan fails at the counter

Counter, line behind you, scan failed. Before you panic, count to three. The merchant POS sometimes needs a beat to catch up, especially at convenience-store chains and the metro topup machines. Rapid-tapping the scan button just stacks failed requests and the cashier's screen freezes for everyone.

If the second try still fails, work the muscle-memory move: turn your VPN fully off, wait three seconds, retry. Alipay payment traffic gets confused on certain VPN protocols and quietly blocks the transaction with no clear error. The VPN-off fix on the troubleshooting page solves about 70 percent of these.

Two things that look like fixes but are not: screenshots of QR codes never work — the code rotates roughly every 30 seconds — and trying to set up WeChat Pay at the register will eat another five minutes you do not have. If the scan keeps failing past the 30-second mark, give up gracefully and switch to cash. Hold up your phone and say 我可以付现金吗? (Wǒ kěyǐ fù xiànjīn ma? — "Can I pay cash?").

One Shenzhen-specific thing — subway turnstiles use a different scan flow than retail counters, so the same fix sequence does not always apply at the metro. And 7-Eleven cashiers have a manual override they will run if you smile and gesture; do not walk away from a Family Mart counter without trying it. If you still need cash on hand, the payment guide lists the Bank of China and ICBC ATMs that take foreign Visa without drama.

Why is my Alipay QR code not working at a Shenzhen shop?
Most of the time the VPN is still on — payment apps detect it and block the transaction. Disconnect fully, wait three seconds, retry. If the QR still fails, the merchant code may have rotated; ask the cashier to refresh the screen and scan the fresh code instead of a screenshot.
What does 'payment failed at counter' mean on Alipay?
It usually means your bank flagged the China transaction as fraud, not that Alipay itself broke. Switch to a backup card inside Alipay and try again. If you only linked one card, pay cash this round and call your bank later to whitelist Chinese merchants — Visa cards generally clear faster than Mastercard.

VPN first

Payment apps are one of the few times your VPN should be off in China.

Cash is the pressure valve

Carry ¥300-500 so one failed QR code does not become the whole afternoon.
