Alipay QR code not working? Fix the thing in front of you.

For when you're already at the counter and the Alipay QR code just failed. Pick what went wrong, try the first fix, and leave the proper setup for when nobody is waiting behind you.

Alipay scan to pay failed at the counter? Do this

You're at the counter, there's a queue behind you, and the scan failed. Before you panic, count to three. The shop's till sometimes needs a moment to catch up, especially at convenience-store chains and the metro top-up machines. Tapping scan again and again just stacks up failed requests, and the cashier's screen freezes for everyone.

If the second try fails too, do the move that should become muscle memory: turn your VPN fully off, wait three seconds, try again. Certain VPN protocols confuse Alipay's payment traffic, and it quietly blocks the payment without a clear error. The VPN-off fix on the troubleshooting page sorts out about 70 percent of these.

Two things that look like fixes but aren't: a screenshot of a QR code never works — the code changes roughly every 30 seconds — and setting up WeChat Pay at the till will eat another five minutes you don't have. If the scan is still failing after 30 seconds, let it go and pay cash. Hold up your phone and say 我可以付现金吗？ (Wǒ kěyǐ fù xiànjīn ma? — "Can I pay cash?").

One thing specific to Shenzhen: metro gates use a different scan flow from shop counters, so the same fixes don't always work at the metro. And 7-Eleven cashiers have a manual override they'll run if you smile and point; don't walk away from a Family Mart counter without trying it either. If you still need cash on hand, the payment guide lists the Bank of China and ICBC ATMs that take a foreign Visa card without fuss.

Why is my Alipay QR code not working at a Shenzhen shop?
Most of the time your VPN is still on — payment apps detect it and block the payment. Disconnect fully, wait three seconds and try again. If the QR code still fails, the shop's code may have changed: ask the cashier to refresh the screen and scan the fresh code, not a screenshot.
What does "Payment failed" mean on Alipay?
Usually that your bank flagged the China payment as fraud, not that Alipay itself is broken. Switch to a backup card inside Alipay and try again. If you only linked one card, pay cash this time and call your bank later to whitelist Chinese merchants — Visa cards generally clear faster than Mastercard.
