Download while you still have normal internet. These work across all of China, not just Shenzhen.
Alipay (支付宝)
CriticalThe payment app. Nothing works without it — metro, taxis, street food, convenience stores. Set up with a foreign card before arrival.

CriticalMessaging, payments, mini-programs. Your hotel concierge, taxi driver, and restaurant will all communicate via WeChat.

NavigationThe only map app that works properly in China. Google Maps is blocked and Apple Maps is unreliable for transit. Amap handles buses, metro, walking, and taxi routing.

Getting around without getting lost
Google Maps doesn't work well in China. These do.
Amap (高德地图)
Best for mostDefault recommendation. Accurate Chinese addresses, real-time bus/metro tracking, walking directions that don't hallucinate.

AlternativeAlternative to Amap. Better indoor maps for malls and airports. Chinese-only interface but excellent data.

Backup onlyWorks behind the firewall but transit data is inconsistent in Shenzhen. Fine for walking, less reliable for buses.

Staying connected behind the Great Firewall
China blocks Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, and most Western apps. You need a VPN and a data plan — this applies everywhere in mainland China.
