TL;DR

For most first-time visitors, Futian is the easiest Hong Kong-to-Shenzhen crossing. Use Shenzhen Bay for Nanshan or Shekou routes, and keep Huanggang in mind if you need a true overnight crossing.

Best default
Futian is the easiest route for most visitors because it connects directly to Hong Kong's East Rail Line and stays fully indoors.
Late-night option
Huanggang is the only true 24/7 crossing if your flight or hotel timing pushes you into overnight hours.
Best for Nanshan
Shenzhen Bay is the practical choice for Nanshan, Shekou, and airport-facing routes even though it needs a bus or taxi.

Which crossing should I use? (Futian — the default)

Travelers walking through Futian Port health quarantine and border signage

Futian Port

深圳市福田区福田口岸

Futian Port, Futian District, Shenzhen

Why Futian

  • Entire journey is underground — no outdoor walking, no bus transfers
  • MTR East Rail Line from anywhere in Kowloon/NT → Lok Ma Chau station → walk directly into immigration
  • On the Shenzhen side you exit into Futian Port MTR station (Line 4)
  • Total time from HK station to Shenzhen metro: 40–60 minutes on a normal day

Step-by-Step: Futian Crossing

From HK:

  1. Take MTR East Rail Line to Lok Ma Chau (last stop, terminus)
  2. Follow signs for "Cross Boundary Passengers"
  3. HK immigration: present your passport (e-Channel if eligible, or counter)
  4. Walk through the covered corridor (~5 min)
  5. Shenzhen immigration: present passport + visa (or visa-free)
  6. Exit into Futian Port MTR Station — you're in Shenzhen

HK MTR fares to Lok Ma Chau (from key stations, 2026):

FromFare (HKD)
Hung Hom~$40
Kowloon Tong~$35
Mong Kok East~$38
Admiralty~$45

Once you clear immigration, your next move depends on where you're headed. The Shenzhen transport guide covers metro connections from each port — Futian drops you on Line 4, Luohu on Line 1, and so on.

What about Luohu / Lo Wu?

Luohu Port

深圳市罗湖区罗湖口岸

Luohu Port, Luohu District, Shenzhen

What It's Like

Luohu is the oldest and most famous crossing — and the most crowded. It connects directly to Luohu commercial district (electronics, fashion, bargain shopping). If shopping is your goal, this is your crossing.

  • HK side: MTR East Rail Line → Lo Wu (the other terminus)
  • Shenzhen side: walk out into Luohu Commercial City mall

Warning

Luohu is overwhelmingly busy on weekends, public holidays, and after 3pm on weekdays. Wait times of 60–90 minutes are not unusual during peak. Go early (before noon) if possible.

When should I use Shenzhen Bay?

Shenzhen Bay Port

深圳市南山区深圳湾口岸

Shenzhen Bay Port, Nanshan District, Shenzhen

What It's Like

Shenzhen Bay crossing is on the western side. Open 06:30–24:00 (not 24/7 — see Huanggang for overnight crossings). Getting there from HK requires a taxi or bus — there's no MTR station.

From HK:

  • Bus: Route B1 from various stops (Tsim Sha Tsui, Wan Chai, etc.) direct to Shenzhen Bay Port — 45–75 min depending on traffic
  • Taxi: ~HKD 200–350 from Tsim Sha Tsui, depending on traffic

On the Shenzhen side:

  • Bus and taxi connections to Shekou, Nanshan, Qianhai
  • Closer to the western tech district (Tencent, DJI HQ area)

Why Choose Shenzhen Bay

  • Night arrivals when Futian/Luohu are closed
  • Heading to Nanshan or Shekou specifically (saves time vs crossing at Futian and riding metro west)
  • You're coming from western HK (Tuen Mun area)

What if I need to cross at night? (Huanggang — 24/7)

Huanggang Port

深圳市福田区皇岗口岸

Huanggang Port, Futian District, Shenzhen

Not to be confused with Futian's "Lok Ma Chau Spur Line" — this is a separate crossing.

  • Metro Line 7 to Huanggang Checkpoint Station, or bus/taxi
  • Open 24 hours — the only land crossing that never closes
  • Less commonly used by tourists during the day, but indispensable for late-night arrivals
  • Good for catching early morning departures or late night returns

How long are the border wait times?

Border wait time clock — fast in early morning and late evening, avoid Friday and Sunday evenings

Live border wait times are on our Live Border Status page, updated in real time.

Verified peak times at Futian (Trip.com data, Nov 2025):

Avoid at all costs:

  • Friday 5–9pm (HK residents going to Shenzhen for the weekend)
  • Sunday 5–9pm (returning to HK)
  • Chinese public holidays — crossings can hit 2–3 hour waits

Do I need a visa to cross from HK to Shenzhen?

Most visitors do not. China now has 79 countries on visa-free entry programs. For the full breakdown, see our visa-free guide — but here is the short version for border crossers:

30-day visa-free (50+ countries): UK, Canada, Australia, all EU countries, Japan, South Korea, and more can enter for up to 30 days with no visa. Cross at any border crossing — Futian, Luohu, Shenzhen Bay, all work. Valid through December 2026.

240-hour transit (55 countries, including USA): Americans and a few others can enter for up to 10 days, but must be transiting to a third country (Hong Kong counts). Entry port matters — Shenzhen Bay and Shekou are designated transit ports, but regular MTR crossings (Futian, Luohu) are technically not. See the visa-free guide for details on designated ports.

Everyone else: Some nationalities can get a 5-day visa-on-arrival at Luohu and Shenzhen Bay crossings (~168 RMB). Otherwise, apply for a visa in advance. Use our visa checker for your specific nationality.

HK Residents (BNO, HKID)

If you hold a valid HKID, you can use the e-Channel at most crossings for fast-track immigration.

What should I bring to the border?

Always:

  • Passport (valid, with at least 6 months remaining)
  • Onward travel plans (have a rough itinerary ready if asked)

Highly recommended:

  • Alipay or WeChat Pay set up (hard to set up in China without a pre-existing account)
  • Shenzhen metro app or Amap downloaded
  • VPN installed and tested (set it up before crossing — harder to download inside)
  • eSIM active or local SIM plan ready

If you're staying overnight, pick your crossing based on where your hotel is — Luohu border for Luohu hotels, Shenzhen Bay for Nanshan/Shekou. The Shenzhen accommodation guide maps districts to crossings so you don't end up riding the metro for an hour after immigration.

What mistakes do first-timers make at the border?

1. Going at the wrong time Friday evening crossings can hit 90 minutes at Luohu. Go early or late.

2. Not having a VPN ready Google Maps stops working the moment you cross. Download Amap (高德) and a VPN before you arrive.

3. Bringing too much cash You won't be able to use most of it — Shenzhen is cashless. Set up Alipay instead.

4. Getting off at Lo Wu thinking it's the fast crossing Lo Wu = Luohu (the busy shopping one). Lok Ma Chau Spur = Futian (the fast one). They're different MTR stations.

5. Not checking wait times Spend 30 seconds on our Live Border Status page before you go.

Once you understand the crossings, the next decisions are usually timing and entry eligibility:

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cross same-day (HK base, day trip to Shenzhen)? Yes, very common. Many HK residents and tourists do this regularly. Budget 1–2 hours for crossing each way on a busy day. A lot of people cross specifically for dental work — Luohu and Futian are the border points closest to Shenzhen's dental district.

Do I need to fill out a customs form? A health declaration QR code is required. You'll see QR codes at the border — scan it and fill in the short form on your phone. Takes 2 minutes.

Can I bring food across? Limited quantities of packaged food are fine. Don't bring fresh meat, produce, or large quantities. The rules are similar to airport customs.

Do they check bags? Sometimes. There are X-ray machines on both sides. Standard airport-style security.

What currency do I need? On the HK side: HKD. The moment you cross into Shenzhen: RMB (or Alipay). Exchange before crossing or withdraw at the ATM just inside the Shenzhen border.
