China Visa Free Canada 2026: 30 Days, Ends 31 December

마지막 확인 2026년 10월 17일 · 9분 분량

핵심 답변

China visa free for Canada: an ordinary Canadian passport gets up to 30 days in mainland China with no visa, from 17 February 2026 until 24:00 on 31 December 2026, Beijing time. Carry a passport with 6 months left (Ottawa's advice, stricter than China's rule), fill in the arrival card online, and you can enter Shenzhen from Hong Kong at any port open to foreign nationals.

  • Stay: Up to 30 days per entry, counted from 00:00 the day after you arrive. Tourism, business, family or friends, exchange, transit.
  • Valid until: 24:00 on 31 December 2026, Beijing time (11:00 in Toronto). No extension announced as of 17 October 2026.
  • Passport: China asks for validity covering the stay. travel.gc.ca asks for 6 months on entry. Plan for 6.
  • From Hong Kong: Any Shenzhen port open to foreign nationals works, including Luohu, Futian and Shenzhen Bay. Hong Kong gives Canadians 90 days visa free.
  • Still need a visa: Over 30 days, work, study, journalism, or a temporary or emergency passport.

China visa free for Canada started on 17 February 2026 and, as written today, stops at the end of 2026. An ordinary Canadian passport gets 30 days with no visa and no advance embassy declaration. Two practical planning points sit outside China's basic waiver rule: Ottawa's own 6-month passport advice, and how the Hong Kong leg changes your clock.

Valid until 24:00 on 31 December 2026, Beijing time (11:00 in Toronto, 08:00 in Vancouver; our conversion). Source: the Chinese Embassy notice for the UK and Canada, the Foreign Ministry, 15 February 2026 and travel.gc.ca (page last updated 14 October 2026). Last verified: 17 October 2026. Extension watch: no extension announced as of that date. We recheck on any Foreign Ministry announcement, and on 1 December 2026 regardless.

Can Canadians visit China without a visa in 2026?

Yes. China's Foreign Ministry put Canada and the UK on its unilateral visa-free list from 17 February 2026: ordinary passport holders "can be exempted from visa to enter China and stay for up to 30 days for business, tourism, family/friends visit, exchange and transit purposes" (MFA). Canada is in the Americas group of the NIA's 50-country list.

Ottawa's version is blunter. travel.gc.ca lists tourist and business visas as "not required for stays of up to 30 days", and student and working visas as "required". That second line matches China's rule that the waiver does not cover work or study (CVASC FAQ, Q6).

You don't need to make an advance declaration to the embassy before you go (Chinese Embassy in Canada FAQ, Q13). Border inspection decides on arrival whether you are let in under the waiver (Q6).

How long can Canadians stay, and when does it end?

Thirty calendar days, counted from 00:00 the day after you enter (NIA). Land at Bao'an at 23:30 on 5 March and your clock starts at 00:00 on 6 March; your last legal day is 4 April (our arithmetic). The half-hour before midnight does not count toward those 30 days.

Two dates matter more than the 30:

  • The program end. The policy runs to 24:00 on 31 December 2026, Beijing time, for Canada and 47 other countries (CVASC FAQ, Q2). If your trip crosses into January 2027, see the open question at the bottom of this page before you buy anything non-refundable.
  • Each new entry. You can enter many times, and "currently" there is no limit on entries or total days (CVASC FAQ, Q12). A Hong Kong weekend in the middle of a long trip starts a fresh 30 days on re-entry, if border inspection agrees your purpose still fits the waiver. Don't treat that as a residency plan (the same answer says visitors must not do things "inconsistent with their purpose of entry").

Need more than 30 days in one go? Get a visa before you fly. After a visa-free entry, a stay permit needs "appropriate and sufficient reasons" (CVASC FAQ, Q11). The FAQ doesn't list which reasons qualify, so this page can't tell you whether yours will be accepted.

Do Canadians need a visa for China?

Not for a trip of 30 days or less for tourism, business meetings, family or friends, exchange, or passing through. Yes in these cases:

  • More than 30 days in one entry.
  • Work, study or journalism, however short (CVASC FAQ, Q6). Ottawa is specific about teachers: "Canadian citizens have been detained and forced to leave the country for working illegally" (travel.gc.ca).
  • A temporary or emergency passport. China's FAQ excludes "temporary or emergency documents other than ordinary passports" (Q7). Lost your passport the week before? The emergency document does not carry the waiver.
  • A trip after 31 December 2026, unless China extends the program.

Travelling on a passport for official travel? The waiver is written for ordinary passports (CVASC FAQ, Q1), and travel.gc.ca says only that "different entry rules may apply". Confirm the visa requirement with the Chinese embassy or a consulate before you travel.

If you hold Canadian and Chinese nationality, travel.gc.ca says to always travel on your Canadian passport and present yourself as Canadian; enter on a Chinese passport or ID card and China "may consider you a citizen of China". This page cannot settle your nationality status; Ottawa's page covers it in more detail.

What does a Canadian passport need at the border?

The 6-month quirk

This is where Ottawa's advice and China's rule part ways. China's own rule for the waiver is "an ordinary passport valid for at least the duration of intended stay in China" (Chinese Embassy in Canada FAQ, Q7). Ottawa's advice says something stricter: "Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months upon entry into China" (travel.gc.ca). The same page warns that your airline's "rules on passport validity may be more stringent than the country's entry rules".

Our call: if your passport expires within 6 months of landing, renew it before the trip. An airline may apply a stricter passport-validity rule at check-in, before you reach a Chinese officer, and China's FAQ is not the airline's rule.

What to carry

ItemChina's ruleWhat Ottawa adds
Ordinary Canadian passportValid for the length of the stay (FAQ Q7)At least 6 months on entry
Onward or return ticketNot a condition; "recommended" as proof of purpose (FAQ Q6)"Be prepared to show proof of onward travel"
Hotel booking or invitation letterRecommended as proof (FAQ Q6)—
Arrival cardOnline before travel, or at the port—
Fingerprints—Taken and retained on entry, ages 14 to 70; "some exceptions may apply"

The arrival card has been online since 20 November 2025: fill it in at s.nia.gov.cn, in the NIA 12367 app, or the WeChat or Alipay mini-program. Paper cards still exist at the port (Chinese Embassy notice). Do it the night before so it's done before you queue.

A passport with an "X" gender marker: Ottawa says it "cannot guarantee your entry or transit through other countries". Ask the Chinese embassy or a consulate before you book.

How do Canadians get to Shenzhen?

Our default route for a Canadian is through Hong Kong. Hong Kong lets Canadians visit without a visa for 90 days (Hong Kong Immigration Department), and China's waiver works at "any sea, road and air port open to foreign nationals" (CVASC FAQ, Q9). Shenzhen has 16 state-approved open ports, including Luohu, Futian, Shenzhen Bay and Liantang on the land border, West Kowloon station on the rail link, Shekou for ferries, and Bao'an Airport (Shenzhen Port Office).

So the short version is: fly into Hong Kong, ride to the border, walk across at Luohu or Futian. Which one fits your hotel is in the Hong Kong to Shenzhen border guide, and the border picker gives you one crossing and a fallback.

Two Canada-flavoured notes:

  • Phones may be checked. Ottawa says border officials "may review the content stored or consulted on your electronic devices, particularly at border crossings between mainland China and Hong Kong" (travel.gc.ca). Travel with the phone you'd be fine handing over.
  • Flying straight into Bao'an works too, since the airport is an open port. We haven't checked which airlines fly Canada–Shenzhen without a stop, so check that with the airline rather than with us.

Canada is also on China's 240-hour visa-free transit list (NIA), but transit is already one of the 30-day waiver's purposes (CVASC FAQ, Q1), so while the waiver runs you don't need the transit rule.

When you still need a visa

Apply before the trip if you are going for more than 30 days, to work, study or report, on a temporary or emergency passport, or after 31 December 2026 without an extension. On a passport for official travel, confirm with the embassy first. travel.gc.ca puts it plainly: if you don't meet the criteria, "make sure you have the appropriate visa before travelling to mainland China". Check the visa category against your purpose with the Chinese embassy or a consulate, not against what a friend got.

Is China safe for Canadian travellers?

Ottawa's advice level for China is "Exercise a high degree of caution", with regional advisories on top (travel.gc.ca, updated 14 October 2026). Read it before you go; it covers exit bans, dual nationality and business disputes in more detail than we can. For the Shenzhen side of the question, read our things to know before visiting China guide.

What we have not verified

  • A trip that starts in 2026 and ends in 2027. No source we read on 17 October 2026 says whether a 30-day entry made in late December 2026 runs into January 2027. Revisit on the next Foreign Ministry announcement on the waiver.
  • An extension past 31 December 2026. Not announced as of 17 October 2026. Revisit on any MFA announcement, or on 1 December 2026.
  • Direct flights from Canada to Shenzhen Bao'an. We read no airline or airport timetable for this page.

Before you go

  1. Run the visa checker if anyone in your group holds a non-Canadian passport.
  2. Set up Alipay with your Canadian card before you fly.
  3. Install a VPN at home, not in the hotel.
  4. Know the hotel registration rule if you're staying with friends.
  5. Open the arrival checklist for the first day.

The other 49 passports on the list, and the 240-hour and mutual-agreement routes, are in the China visa free countries guide. Travelling with Australians or Brits? Their passports have different quirks: China visa free for Australians, China visa free for UK citizens.

자주 묻는 질문

Is China visa free for Canadians in 2026?

Yes, until 31 December 2026. Since 17 February 2026, ordinary Canadian passport holders can enter China without a visa for up to 30 days for business, tourism, family or friend visits, exchange or transit. China's Foreign Ministry and the Government of Canada both give 31 December 2026 as the end date.

When does China visa free end for Canadians?

The Chinese Embassy in the UK, announcing the policy for the UK and Canada together, gives the window as 00:00 on 17 February 2026 to 24:00 on 31 December 2026, Beijing time. That is 11:00 on 31 December in Toronto. On 17 October 2026 we found no announcement extending it.

Does my Canadian passport need 6 months validity for China?

China's rule for the waiver is a passport valid for the length of your stay. The Government of Canada's travel advice says your passport must be valid for at least 6 months on entry, and warns that an airline's passport-validity rules may be stricter than the country's. Travel with 6 months and you satisfy both.

Can Canadians enter Shenzhen from Hong Kong without a visa?

Yes. The 30-day waiver works at any port open to foreign nationals, and Luohu, Futian, Shenzhen Bay and Liantang are all state-approved open ports. Hong Kong itself lets Canadians visit without a visa for 90 days.

Do Canadians need an onward ticket to enter China visa free?

It is not a condition of the 30-day waiver. China's visa-free FAQ recommends carrying air tickets and accommodation bookings as proof of your purpose, and Canada's travel advice says to be prepared to show proof of onward travel. Carry the booking.
