China Visa Free UK 2026: 30 Days for British Citizens

마지막 확인 2026년 10월 17일 · 10분 분량

핵심 답변

China visa free for the UK: a passport whose nationality reads British citizen gets up to 30 days in mainland China with no visa, from 00:00 on 17 February 2026 to 24:00 on 31 December 2026, Beijing time. Other British nationalities are outside what GOV.UK describes, and China does not recognise BN(O) passports. GOV.UK asks for 6 months' validity and 2 blank pages; Hong Kong gives British citizens 180 days, and the waiver works at any Shenzhen port open to foreign nationals.

  • Who qualifies: Passports with nationality British citizen, including Crown Dependency passports, per GOV.UK.
  • Valid until: 24:00 on 31 December 2026, Beijing time (16:00 in London). No extension announced as of 17 October 2026.
  • Passport: GOV.UK: 6 months after arrival and 2 blank pages. China: valid for the stay. Emergency Travel Documents excluded.
  • From Hong Kong: Any Shenzhen port open to foreign nationals, including Luohu, Futian and Shenzhen Bay. Hong Kong gives British citizens 180 days.
  • Still need a visa: Over 30 days, paid work, study, journalism, long-term assignments.

China visa free for the UK started on 17 February 2026, the same day as Canada's, and ends on 31 December 2026, the same date as 47 other countries on the list. It gives 30 days with no visa. The catch is one line on your passport's data page: GOV.UK limits the waiver to passports "whose nationality is listed as 'British citizen.'"

Valid until 24:00 on 31 December 2026, Beijing time (16:00 on 31 December in London; our conversion). Started 00:00 on 17 February 2026, Beijing time. Source: the Chinese Embassy in the UK, 15 February 2026, the Foreign Ministry the same day and GOV.UK (still current at 17 October 2026). Last verified: 17 October 2026. Extension watch: no extension announced as of that date. We recheck on any Foreign Ministry announcement, and on 1 December 2026 regardless.

Is China visa free for UK citizens in 2026?

Yes, if your passport says "British citizen". GOV.UK: "Until 31 December 2026, you can enter China visa free for stays of up to 30 days for business, tourism, family or friend visits or transit" (GOV.UK). China lists the country as "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" in the Europe group of its 50-country list.

No advance embassy declaration is needed (CVASC FAQ, Q13). Border inspection decides on arrival, and the FAQ says entry "shall be denied" when your purpose doesn't fit the waiver (Q6).

When does UK visa-free travel to China start and end?

It already started. The Foreign Ministry answered the question "During the Canadian and UK leaders' visits to China [...] Do you have any updates?" on 15 February 2026 with a start date of 17 February (MFA). The Chinese Embassy in London gave the exact window: "From 00:00 on February 17, 2026 to 24:00 on December 31, 2026 (Beijing time)" (embassy notice).

If you're reading old news that says "from next month": that was February. If you're planning for 2027: no extension had been announced as of 17 October 2026, and the 31 December date applies to 48 of the 50 countries on the list, the UK included (CVASC FAQ, Q2).

The 30 days run from 00:00 on the day after you enter (NIA). Land at Bao'an at 14:00 on 10 May and your last legal day is 9 June (our arithmetic).

Do British citizens need a visa for China?

Not for 30 days or less for the five allowed purposes. GOV.UK lists when you do: "If you travel to China for any other reason (this includes paid work, long-term assignments, journalism, or study) or for a stay exceeding 30 days, you must apply for a visa before your trip to China." Add two document cases:

  • Emergency Travel Documents. GOV.UK: "Holders of Emergency Travel Documents are not allowed to enter China without a visa." China's FAQ says the same of temporary and emergency documents (Q7).
  • Any trip after 31 December 2026, unless the waiver is extended.

Born in China to a Chinese parent? GOV.UK warns that China "does not recognise dual nationality" and may treat you as a Chinese citizen "even if you used a British passport to enter China". Read GOV.UK's nationality section before you rely on this page.

Which British passports qualify?

GOV.UK is precise: "This policy applies to all holders of standard British passports whose nationality is listed as 'British citizen.' Holders of British Crown Dependency passports whose nationality is listed as 'British citizen' are eligible for this policy." So a Jersey, Guernsey or Isle of Man passport that says British citizen qualifies.

Open your passport to the photo page and read the nationality line. Then:

Nationality on the passportMainland China, 30-day waiverHong Kong visit, visa free
British citizen (UK or Crown Dependency passport)Yes, per GOV.UK180 days
British Overseas Territories citizenNot covered by GOV.UK's description; ask the Chinese Embassy in London90 days
British Overseas citizenSame as above90 days
British subject, British protected personSame as above90 days
British National (Overseas)China has not recognised the BN(O) passport as a travel document since 31 January 2021 (MFA spokesperson, 29 January 2021)Not in this table; see Hong Kong Immigration

Hong Kong figures: Hong Kong Immigration Department. We could not find a Chinese government page that names BOTC, BOC, British subject or BPP passports either way, which is why those rows say "ask" rather than "no". GOV.UK's China page itself says it is "for people travelling on a full 'British citizen' passport". GOV.UK's advice for anyone in doubt is to "verify the conditions for visa free entry with the Chinese Embassy in London". Our call: if yours says anything else, treat the waiver as not yours until the embassy says otherwise in writing.

What to carry at the border

ItemChina's ruleWhat GOV.UK adds
PassportOrdinary passport valid for the length of the stay (CVASC FAQ, Q7)Expiry at least 6 months after arrival, and 2 blank pages
Onward or return ticketNot a condition; "recommended" as proof of purpose (FAQ Q6)—
Hotel booking or invitationRecommended as proof (FAQ Q6)—
Arrival cardOnline before travel, or at the port—
BiometricsMay be collected at entry"may collect biometric data, including scanned fingerprints and photos"

The 2 blank pages are GOV.UK's addition; China's FAQ doesn't mention them. A frequent traveller's passport with 8 months left and a full visa section clears China's rule but not GOV.UK's advice, and GOV.UK says to "check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements". Our call: 6 months and 2 clean pages, or renew first.

The arrival card can be filled in online since 20 November 2025, at s.nia.gov.cn, in the NIA 12367 app, or in the WeChat or Alipay mini-program; paper cards are still at the port (Chinese Embassy notice). Fill it in the night before.

Getting from the UK to Shenzhen

The waiver works at "any sea, road and air port open to foreign nationals" (CVASC FAQ, Q9), and Shenzhen has 16 state-approved open ports: Luohu, Futian, Shenzhen Bay and Liantang on the Hong Kong land border, West Kowloon on the rail link, Shekou for ferries, Bao'an for flights (Shenzhen Port Office).

Our default for a British citizen is via Hong Kong. You get 180 days there with no visa, the most generous number in this whole guide, and you walk into Shenzhen at Luohu or Futian. The Hong Kong to Shenzhen border guide compares the crossings, and the border picker gives you one plus a fallback. Flying into Bao'an works too; we haven't checked which airlines fly UK–Shenzhen without a stop, so ask the airline.

One GOV.UK line looks scary but sits in its section on visa holders: "If you visit Hong Kong from mainland China and want to return to the mainland, you need a visa that allows you to make a second entry into China." On the waiver, coming back from Hong Kong is a new visa-free entry with a new 30 days, subject to border inspection like the first (Q6), and China's FAQ says there is "currently" no limit on entries (Q12).

Transit or a layover in China on a UK passport

Transit is one of the purposes the 30-day waiver covers, so a British citizen changing planes in China doesn't need a visa for it. The UK is also on China's 240-hour visa-free transit list (NIA), but while the 30-day waiver runs you don't need the transit rule. For a layover where you never leave the airport, China's 24-hour rule covers every nationality transiting to a third country or region, with a confirmed onward international ticket, as long as you don't leave the restricted area of the port (same NIA page).

When you still need a visa

More than 30 days, paid work, study, journalism, a long-term assignment, an Emergency Travel Document, a passport that doesn't say "British citizen" unless the Chinese Embassy in London confirms otherwise, or a trip after 31 December 2026 without an extension. GOV.UK names the visa centres as London, Manchester, Belfast and Edinburgh, and says applicants aged 14 to 70 attend in person for fingerprints.

What we have not verified

  • BOTC, BOC, British subject and BPP passports on the mainland. GOV.UK limits the waiver to "British citizen"; we found no Chinese government page that names these nationalities. Revisit when the Chinese Embassy in London answers in writing or publishes a notice.
  • A trip that runs into 2027. No source we read on 17 October 2026 says whether a 30-day entry made in late December 2026 can run into January 2027.
  • An extension past 31 December 2026. Not announced as of 17 October 2026. Revisit on any MFA announcement, or on 1 December 2026.
  • Direct flights from the UK to Shenzhen Bao'an. We read no airline or airport timetable for this page.

Before you go

  1. Run the visa checker for anyone in your group on a different passport.
  2. Set up Alipay with your UK card before you fly.
  3. Install a VPN at home.
  4. Check hotel registration if you're staying with friends.
  5. Open the arrival checklist for day one.

The full 50-country list, 240-hour transit and the mutual-agreement passports are in the China visa free countries guide. Same waiver, other passports: China visa free for Canadians, China visa free for Australians.

자주 묻는 질문

Is China visa free for UK citizens?

Yes, until 31 December 2026, for passports whose nationality is listed as British citizen. They can enter China without a visa for up to 30 days for business, tourism, family or friend visits, exchange or transit. GOV.UK says Crown Dependency passports showing British citizen qualify too.

When did visa free travel to China start for the UK, and when does it end?

It started at 00:00 on 17 February 2026 and runs to 24:00 on 31 December 2026, Beijing time, according to the Chinese Embassy in the UK. In London that end point is 16:00 on 31 December. No extension had been announced on 17 October 2026.

Do British Overseas Territories citizens or BN(O) holders get visa free entry to China?

GOV.UK limits the waiver to passports whose nationality is British citizen, so a BOTC, BOC, British subject or British protected person passport is outside what GOV.UK describes; ask the Chinese Embassy in London before travelling. China has not recognised the BN(O) passport as a valid travel document since 31 January 2021.

How many months does a British passport need for China?

GOV.UK says the expiry date must be at least 6 months after you arrive, with 2 blank pages. China's own visa-free FAQ asks for an ordinary passport valid for the length of your stay. Travel with 6 months and 2 blank pages and you clear both.

Do British citizens need a visa to go from Hong Kong to Shenzhen?

Not on the 30-day waiver. It works at any port open to foreign nationals, including Luohu, Futian and Shenzhen Bay. Hong Kong gives British citizens 180 days visa free, so a Hong Kong stopover needs no visa either.
