En resumen

For qualifying business visits, a valid ABTC with CHN approval and its matching passport permits entry without a separate visa for up to 60 days. It does not authorise work. On October 9, 2026, our official-source check found no China effective date for the announced 90-day allowance. US and Canadian cards do not provide China's visa waiver; event attendance is separate.

Stay
Plan on up to 60 days per entry within card validity. The August 2026 90-day announcement leaves implementation dates to each economy; no China date found in sources checked October 9.
Purpose
Genuine business visits only in this guide. ABTC does not authorise employment; planned longer stays need the right entry arrangement before travel.
Condition
Valid card with CHN approval plus its matching valid passport. Virtual ABTC accepted since May 1, 2023.
Extension
Medical or business emergency: apply seven days before expiry. Up to 30 days requires approval; applying does not authorise overstay.
Malaysia
The embassy excludes ABTC stays from the bilateral visa exemption tally of 90 days in any 180. This is a Malaysia-specific rule.
At the border
NIA gives all ABTC holders use of the special passage. Shenzhen reports separately identify APEC meeting-delegate lanes; ask staff which passage to use.
US and Canada
Their cards offer expedited processing without Chinese visa pre-clearance. They do not replace a Chinese visa or another applicable exemption.
Event access
ABTC provides no meeting accreditation. CCPIT controls CEO Summit invitations; an open public registration window was not established in the October 9 check.

With CHN on your card and the matching passport, you can enter mainland China on business for up to 60 days per entry, with no separate visa. A move to 90 days was announced on August 27, 2026; the official pages we checked on October 9, 2026 gave no start date for China. US-issued and Canadian-issued cards carry no Chinese visa waiver.

Last verified: October 9, 2026. Entry, passport, lane and summit sources re-read; our visa checker rerun for 20 cases.

What does an APEC card let you do in China?

Think of the APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) as pre-clearance for business trips, separate from a work permit and from a conference badge. Each economy that has cleared you is listed on the card. China's code is CHN.

NIA's border-inspection rule is short: with a valid card and the matching valid passport, a foreign holder enters without a separate visa and can stay up to 60 days per entry.

Check three things first:

  • CHN is on your card or in the app. Without it the card does not replace a visa. You need one, or an exemption your passport already has.
  • The phone version counts. The mainland has accepted the virtual card since May 1, 2023 (Foreign Ministry's Hong Kong office).
  • US-issued and Canadian-issued cards are the exception. APEC calls those economies transitional members, and CBP confirms the US card has no economies on its reverse. You get expedited processing and still need a Chinese visa or another exemption.

The card covers business visits. APEC's FAQ excludes paid employment and working holidays and says the scheme is not designed for tourism. Taking a job in China? Have your employer arrange the work authorisation before you travel.

My call: apply only if the longer stay or repeat visits justify the fee and the wait. Singapore charges a non-refundable S$100, and ICA quotes about four months for the initial card. That card lists only the economies that have already cleared you, so check CHN is on it. Later approvals arrive on a final card at about nine months.

Can you stay 90 days yet?

Plan on 60. The Foreign Ministry's August 27, 2026 statement names China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Philippines and Singapore in the proposed move from 60 to 90 days, then adds: “The specific implementation time shall be determined by the relevant economies.” On October 9, 2026 we found no China start date in the official pages listed under Sources, and NIA still states 60.

Trip runs past 60 days? Shorten it, or get a visa covering the whole stay before you leave home.

For a medical or business emergency inside China, NIA requires a stay-permit application with supporting materials seven days before your stay ends, and approval can add up to 30 days. Applying does not extend your stay. If nothing has been granted by your last day, leave on time.

Is ABTC better than your passport's visa-free entry?

My read: the card pays off most on a Malaysian passport. Malaysia's visa-free deal gives 30 days per entry and no more than 90 in any 180, and the embassy's FAQ (Q5) says days spent in China on an ABTC stay outside that 90. Cross every few weeks and the card protects your visa-free days. The rule is Malaysia's; do not assume it for another passport.

For ordinary passports on business visits, checked October 9, 2026. The card column assumes CHN on the card and the matching passport.

Two hypothetical trips: six weeks of sourcing meetings fit inside 60 days on the card and overrun a 30-day exemption. For two one-week trips I would skip the application and live with the 30-day ceiling. On a Philippine passport with no usable visa, weigh the card's fee and wait against a visa's cost.

Which lane can you use in Shenzhen?

Show your card to border staff and ask for the ABTC passage. NIA's national rule says all ABTC holders may use the special passage for border inspection.

Do not plan your crossing around the new APEC lanes. They are called “APEC参会代表专用通道”: lanes for APEC meeting delegates. An August 4 report on Futian, reproduced from Shenzhen Special Zone Daily, names them, and a second report, about August 20, says all passenger-inspection ports have them. Both are news reports on the city government's website, and neither says who else may use the lanes.

Bring the matching valid passport, the card (plastic or app) and your arrival card. Follow the NIA arrival-card instructions; nothing in the special-passage rule says card holders skip it.

Crossing late at night? Huanggang is the 24-hour port. Its new building opens at 06:30 on October 12, 2026, by joint announcement on October 9, and the October 7 Transport Department notice sets out the buses and coaches that serve it. The new Huanggang Port guide has the routes, and the border crossing guide compares the alternatives.

Where do you apply, and what does it cost?

Apply to the issuing authority of your home economy, following APEC's process, wherever you happen to live. No card lasts more than five years.

For November 2026 I would not count on a new card: Singapore's timeline is too long for an application made on October 9. Use the visa-free entry you already have and accept its stay limit, or pay for a visa.

  • New passport: check your issuer's renewal procedure (APEC). Singapore requires a new application.
  • Lost card in China: NIA lets you leave on your valid passport once your ABTC entry is verified. Report the loss to your issuer.
  • Family: your spouse and children need their own visa or exemption.

Does the card get you into APEC 2026 meetings?

No. The card gets you through the border and carries no meeting accreditation.

The CEO Summit runs November 17–18, 2026 in Shenzhen (CCPIT's September 10 announcement). CCPIT's July 17 invitation notice limits authorised invitations and registration to CCPIT and the summit website. On October 9 we found no open public registration window there. Wait for the organiser to confirm before paying for a trip built around attending.

The leaders' meeting is November 18–19, 2026 (Foreign Ministry, December 12, 2025). That announcement gives no public ticket and no admission route for card holders.

For ordinary business that week, the APEC 2026 Shenzhen guide tracks confirmed restrictions and possible disruption.

Questions people ask about the APEC card and China

Can I enter China with an APEC Business Travel Card?

Yes, for business visits, if CHN is on your card and you carry the matching passport. The mainland has accepted the virtual card since May 1, 2023. The card does not let you take a job in China.

How long can an APEC card holder stay in China?

Up to 60 days per entry while the card is valid. A move to 90 was announced on August 27, 2026, with no China start date in the official pages we checked on October 9. For longer, get a visa before you travel; extensions inside China are for emergencies and need approval.

Do I need a visa for China with an APEC Business Travel Card?

Not for a business visit, if CHN is on the card and you bring the matching passport. Without CHN you need a visa or another exemption. US-issued and Canadian-issued cards do not carry China's visa waiver.

Is the APEC Business Travel Card worth it for China?

Only if you travel on business and need more than your passport already gives. Singapore, Malaysia and Australia passports get 30 days visa-free; the card makes it 60, and Malaysians' card days stay outside their 90-in-180 count. Philippine passport holders skip a separate visa, though a multiple-entry visa already in hand may do the same.

Can a US citizen get an APEC card?

Yes. US citizens travelling on verified business, or on government business tied to APEC, can apply through Customs and Border Protection if they belong to Global Entry, NEXUS or SENTRI; the fee is US$70. The US card gets you the fast-track lanes only. China does not accept it in place of a visa. (CBP)

How we checked

On October 9, 2026 we ran this site's visa checker for five ordinary passports, two ways in and two purposes: 20 cases. It has no ABTC option, so the table shows what each passport gets without the card.

To repeat it, open the public visa checker and pick your passport, “Flying in” or “From Hong Kong”, then “Tourism / Business / Family” or “Transit to a third country”.

A 5-day Shenzhen port visa is an application at the port with documents checked (newspaper report on the Shenzhen government website). If the trip matters, I would get a visa before travelling and accept the paperwork. 240-hour transit depends on NIA's conditions: an onward ticket to a third country or region, a designated entry port and a valid travel document. The Hong Kong warning is about your route and does not clear you for a land crossing.

We checked the calculator, not a border crossing. Nobody applied for a card, crossed a border or timed a queue for this guide.
