Direct answer

Fast answer first, then the detail and edge cases below.

Verified Oct 9, 2026

TL;DR

Published rule (September 2024): Friday and Saturday nights plus major holidays, three 15-minute shows at 19:00, 20:00 and 21:00 from November to March and 19:30, 20:30 and 21:30 from April to October. Since the 2026 upgrade we have found only the October 1–7 holiday run confirmed, so check your date in the booking service before you go (checked October 9, 2026). Civic Center Square needs a booking; the Children's Palace side, Lianhuashan and Talent Park are listed without one. Bad weather can cancel a show.

Status
Paused for maintenance on April 30, 2026 and returned for October 1–7. As of October 9, 2026, we had not found official confirmation of the weekly nights after October 7.
Show nights
Published rule (September 19, 2024): Fridays, Saturdays, major holidays and the night before them. Monday to Thursday is ordinary lighting, 19:00–22:00. Ordinary Sundays are off; the October 1–7, 2026 holiday run included Sunday October 4.
Showtimes
Published rule: 19:00, 20:00 and 21:00 from November to March; 19:30, 20:30 and 21:30 from April to October; about 15 minutes each. Severe weather or an official warning can cancel a show.
Booking
Civic Center Square only, through the WeChat service 福田中心区夜景灯光预约导引服务. Slots are said to open at 10:00 three days ahead, but the published example opens two days ahead, so check the date selector. Passport entry untested as of October 9, 2026.
Talent Park
A separate show over the Houhai skyline in Nanshan, free and unreserved per the district's 2024–25 listing. Southern Metropolis Daily (September 9, 2026) reports Friday, Saturday and public-holiday shows at the same seasonal times; the original notice was not located.
Computed walks
Routing estimates on OpenStreetMap data, October 9, 2026, not walked: Civic Center Exit A to the square 659 m, about 9 min; Children's Palace Exit C to the plaza 164 m, about 2 min; Children's Palace Exit F1 to the Lianhuashan summit 1,246 m, about 17 min; Talent Park Exit B1 to Starlight Bridge 1,282 m, about 17 min.

After the October 1–7 holiday run, we had not found official confirmation of the weekly shows as of October 9, 2026. Check your date before you cross town.

The published rule gives Friday and Saturday nights, about 15 minutes a show: 19:00, 20:00 and 21:00 from November to March, and 19:30, 20:30 and 21:30 from April to October. That rule dates from September 2024. Since the 2026 upgrade, the only run we found confirmed is the October 1–7 holiday (Futian District notice, September 29, 2026). Check your date in the WeChat service 福田中心区夜景灯光预约导引服务 before you cross town. If the square is booked out, or the form will not take your passport, go to the Children's Palace side: no booking, and you see most of the display.

Last verified: October 9, 2026. We re-read the schedule, booking and airspace notices and searched for a post-holiday schedule.

Is the Shenzhen light show running now?

Unconfirmed after the holiday run, so check first. The Futian show paused for maintenance on April 30, 2026 (city notice, April 23, 2026) and returned for October 1–7 with shows at 19:30, 20:30 and 21:30 (October 1 report). That proves the show came back. Whether it runs this Friday is a separate question, and the booking service is where to look.

Do not expect nightly shows either. Futian turned down a daily-show proposal for now, citing demand and cost; any change needs approval (Southern Metropolis Daily, September 9, 2026).

What nights and times does the published rule give?

The nightly building lighting is a static skyline. The show is a scheduled performance on top of it.

Published rule
Show nightsFridays, Saturdays, major holidays and the night before them
ShowtimesNovember to March: 19:00, 20:00, 21:00. April to October: 19:30, 20:30, 21:30. About 15 minutes each
Other nightsMonday to Thursday: ordinary lighting, 19:00 to 22:00. Ordinary Sundays: off

This is Futian's September 19, 2024 rule. The only run we found confirmed since the upgrade is October 1–7, 2026 (district notice). It included Sunday October 4, so a holiday overrides the Sunday rule.

Check the weather on the day, even for the spots with no booking. Shows can be adjusted or cancelled for severe weather or an official warning (February 13, 2026 guidance), and for overcrowding (September 29 notice).

Pre-upgrade listings add more dark nights: make-up working days, memorial dates such as December 13, and big events on the square, when you get ordinary lighting or none (Bendibao, January 19, 2026; bureau guidance, February 8, 2023).

Which viewing spot should I choose?

My call: the Children's Palace side if you do not want to deal with booking. You see most of the display and miss the rest. Book the square if you want the towers right above you. Climb Lianhuashan only if you want the walk too: it is the panorama, with not much room at the top.

Spots and views: EyeShenzhen, February 13, 2026. Square rules: Futian, September 29, 2026. Talent Park: Nanshan's 2024–25 listing and the October 1, 2026 report.

The walking times are routing estimates. Nobody on our side has walked them yet. We computed them on October 9, 2026, from each metro exit to a map point we picked, which may not be the real entrance. They ignore queues, barriers, steps and the climb. Each link draws the route; raw requests are under Sources.

How do I book Civic Center Square?

Search 福田中心区夜景灯光预约导引服务 in WeChat. The square needs a booking (Futian notice, September 29, 2026); the other three spots are listed without one.

When slots open is less clear than it sounds. The notice says 10:00, three days before the show. The February 13 guidance says the same, then has February 14 bookings opening on February 12, two days ahead. Skip the arithmetic and open the date selector.

The detailed entry rules I can find are from that February guidance, before the upgrade, so read the current terms when you book:

  • Four viewing zones.
  • Arrive at least 30 minutes early; there is no late entry.
  • One QR code per person, groups of up to three.
  • Three no-shows in 30 days suspends your booking for a while.

Passports: we have not tested whether the form accepts a passport number. If it stops you, do not burn the evening fighting it. Go to the Children's Palace side. (Same with a stroller, which the square bans in its designated areas. We have not checked a stroller route on that side.)

Metro exits: for National Day, Bendibao (September 29, 2026) listed Civic Center exits A and F for the square, with B and E entry-only, A exit-only, C and D closed and F crowd-controlled. That was a listings-site preview we did not see in operation. Follow the staff on the night.

What is different about Talent Park?

It is a separate show in a different district: Nanshan, across the Houhai skyline and the lake, watched from Starlight Bridge (October 1, 2026 report). There is no booking and it is free, according to Nanshan's 2024–25 listing.

Already staying in Nanshan? I would watch this one and skip the trip to Futian. You give up the Futian towers and you skip the booking.

The weekly schedule is press-reported only. Southern Metropolis Daily, September 9, 2026, quoting the 创新南山 channel, gives Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays, at the same seasonal times as Futian's rule. We could not find the original post. The bureau's 2026 National Day programme confirms the holiday slots only.

Getting there: Talent Park station is on Line 13, Houhai on Lines 2/8, 11 and 13, Dengliang on Lines 2/8 (Transport Bureau list, January 14, 2026). Our computed walks to Starlight Bridge: about 17 minutes from Talent Park Exit B1, 19 from Houhai Exit H, 25 from Dengliang Exit C. Nanshan's listing quotes 1.2 km from Houhai H and 1 km from Dengliang C, but only to the north and west gates.

What rules affect cameras and APEC week?

Cameras: the bans in the table apply to the square's designated areas (September 29, 2026 notice, repeating February's list). Shoot handheld.

Drones: the police notice of July 24, 2026 also puts the area bounded by Xinzhou Road, Nonglin Road, Beihuan Boulevard and Binhe Boulevard under strict airspace control until 24:00 on November 23, 2026. Flying there without authorisation is prohibited. I would leave the drone at the hotel.

APEC week: the leaders meet on November 18–19. The People's Congress decision of September 30, 2026 lets the city impose temporary safety, city-management and transport measures until November 30, each of which must be published. The decision itself closes nothing at the square, and by October 9, 2026 we had found no APEC notice about the show.

If the Friday and Saturday rule holds, the show nights around the summit are November 13–14 and 20–21, at 19:00, 20:00 and 21:00. Those dates come from the rule and the calendar; no APEC announcement names them. The APEC visitor guide tracks what is confirmed.

How should I plan the evening and journey home?

Take the metro and accept the walk from the exit. The September 29 notice warns of limited parking and road controls. Our transport guide covers the metro and Didi. Check your last train before you pick the late show.

My plan: an afternoon in Huaqiangbei, dinner, then the show. In October that means 19:30, 20:30 or 21:30; the 19:00 start applies from November. Afterwards, a drink in Futian or Houhai.

Book a dinner you would want anyway. If the show is off, you still had a good night.

Sources

Checked October 9, 2026.

How we searched: on October 9, 2026 (last pass 01:23 China time) we searched the Futian, Nanshan and Urban Management Bureau sites for weekly shows after October 7 and for an APEC schedule. We found neither. We did not open the booking service, every WeChat announcement, or the QR calendar on Nanshan's October page.

What we have not checked yet: the weekly programme after October 7, the booking release date, the passport fields, and the six walks on foot. We will update this page when a district publishes the programme or we can open a live booking date.

Do this next

  1. Learn the metro before show night: Civic Center station, how to pay at the gates, and when to give up on Didi
  2. Pick a bar for afterwards: CoCo Park for Futian, Houhai for Talent Park

About the writer

Stometa

Lived in Shenzhen 2018–2023. Still come back every few months.

I write this site the way I'd text you if you asked me what to do before landing — skip the stuff that sounds good on TripAdvisor, say what actually worked when I was there. Some things in Shenzhen are quietly broken. When they are, I say so.
